Amazing journey for Shufflebottom at Bristol Airport
Shufflebottom is pleased to announce that, once again, we are working in collaboration with construction and civil engineering specialists, and lead contractor, ENCON CONSTRUCTION, as part of the supply chain helping to transform Bristol Airport.
Bristol Airport is developing its capacity from 10 million passengers per annum to 12 million per annum in an overall £400 million investment in the expansion of its terminal. This will result in satisfying the increased demand for flights, cater for increased footfall, and importantly, enhance the airport experience for customers. The Airport is also building a new public transport interchange, which will more than double the number of bus and coach bays, and enable the Airport to further improve public transport links across the region. Shufflebottom is currently working with ENCON CONSTRUCTION to refurbish the Main Gate which provides access from landside to airside areas. This element of the project involves 2 Phases to create an additional lane resulting in 2 airside access lanes. We handed over phase 1 in September last year with instructions to design and build the structural steel frame and cladding for the roof.
Phase 1 was inclusive of new passenger lanes with our delivery including nearly 8 tonnes of steelwork as well as 292sqm of single-skin cladding.
Shufflebottom has been awarded further work starting on site shortly to refurb the existing 2 lanes under Phase 2.
No project is ever without its challenges: the main challenges of this brief were having to work in a restricted area from a security and space point of view and maintaining the traffic flow through the existing gate such that critical airside deliveries are not delayed. Despite these challenges, Shufflebottom delivered successful completion of Phase 1.
It is particularly satisfying for us at Shufflebottom to work with a company like ENCON CONSTRUCTION as we share their values and aims to best practice. Like them, we invest in social value and educational engagement such as upskilling, CPD training, apprenticeships and supporting equality and diversity into the construction industry.
Over the years, across the many projects we have delivered with ENCON CONSTRUCTION, Shufflebottom has developed an amazing working relationship across the whole workforce operation from on-site foremen and tradesmen to the Directors. We’d like to thank ENCON for investing in us again and look forward to bringing the Bristol Airport project and our amazing journey there to conclusion. We also look forward to more productive collaborations in the future.
