GAGA Construction Awards 2023 – we’ve made the shortlist!

It’s been a great start to July with the news that Shufflebottom has been shortlisted in the Galvanizers Association Galvanizing Awards (GAGA Construction Awards) 2023.

The GAGA Construction Awards is an annual competition that has been recognising the use of galvanizing excellence since 1984. It’s not the first time we’ve been shortlisted, but we’re especially pleased this year as GAGA has stated that the “calibre of the entrants was outstanding” and that the “selection process was both challenging and exhilarating.”

The Awards have 6 categories: the Architecture Award; the Engineering Award; the Sustainable Award; the Detail Award; the Duplex Systems Award; and, the Art Award – all of which therefore attract a range of diverse entries, from intricate sculpture to major infrastructure projects.

Shufflebottom’s shortlistings cross three categories: Architecture, Engineering and Sustainability, GAGA recognising the role of our galvanizing in the project we delivered for the redevelopment of Merthyr Tydfil Bus Station, working in partnership with the wonderful Morgan Sindall Construction.

The GAGA website www.galvanizing.org.uk  and the ‘older posts’ section of this website has full details of the description of the project which has sustainability at its heart, and importantly of the social, economic, and environmental impacts that go way beyond the physical building. But it’s worth pulling out a few headline statistics which illustrate why we’re so proud of our contribution to a development of this size and scope that will have impact for years to come:

  • £12million value

  • Completed 2021 on time and on budget

  • Benchmark for green transport infrastructure in Wales

  • 1st in Wales that allows for charging of electric vehicles

  • Huge social impact

  • 134.5 tonnes of hot-rolled steel delivered

  • 0.529 of cold-rolled steel delivered

  • 43.5 tonnes of galvanized steel

  • 91 tonnes of painted steel

We would like to congratulate all the other shortlisted projects in this prestigious competition and wish them luck when the results are announced on 27th July. We’d also like to thank the judges: Matthew Wells (Techniker); Isabelle Priest (RIBA Journal); Theodore Molly (PUP Architects); and, Iqbal Jonal (Galvanizers Association), and also to Shufflebottom’s very own Project Manager, Steve Sharp, for his input and all the lovely images!
