Walking together for Macmillan Cancer

We’d like to give a big shout out to our very own Alex Shufflebottom, Director here at Shufflebottom, who walked the walk and completed the Gower Mighty Hike 2023 on Saturday, 8th July in aid of Macmillan Cancer.

Gower Mighty Hike is one of the 12 Mighty Hikes organised this year throughout the UK in areas of scenic beauty by Macmillan Cancer. Walkers commit to a gruelling full marathon and at the same time raise funds for this amazing charity to help them give people the support they need when they need it most.

Alex has been training for months, but it was the first time she had walked the 27 miles. Despite the blisters and the aching limbs she is so delighted to have reached the finish line. Everyone has their own reason for taking on an epic feat like this and for Alex it was two-fold: to set herself a personal challenge and to do her bit to contribute to Macmillan.

She was helped through the slog of steep inclines along Gower’s coastal path and the trudge through soft sand along the northern estuary beaches, by her friend, Tina, who crossed the line with her.

Tina is also a long-time customer and supplier of Shuffebottom, through her business LAS Recycling, in Lampeter. www.lasrecycling.com Like Shufflebottom LAS Recycling is a family-run business with a long and established reputation of being an expert in waste management and recycling in mid and west Wales. LAS Recycling manages the industrial waste for us here at Shufflebottom and has also bought a range of steel-framed buildings from us over a period of more than twenty years. It made it very special therefore for Alex and Tina to share a special moment together.

Once Alex’s aches and pains subside she’ll probably be thinking of signing up again for Gower’s Mighty Hike in 2024. The date will be announced soon on the Macmillan website www.mightyhikes.macmillan.org.uk where you can find more information about the valuable work Macmillan Cancer does and how every step taken in a Mighty Hike raises much-needed funds. For example, £264 funds a Macmillan Support Worker for 2 days and £1,202 funds a Macmillan Nurse for 7 days.

So watch that space and perhaps get the T-shirt yourself for next year and like Alex and Tina, walk the walk!
