Helping to Build-on the Success of Farmer Barnes’ Dairy

Farmer Barnes’ Dairy – Educational Farm, is, as the name suggests, much more that the brand new modern-day dairy farms that is at its heart. Situated in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, the 500 acre, 300 cows in herd, working farm, is an educational destination offering a whole host of wonderful experience and opportunities to see how a UK dairy farm actually works, including:

  • farm tours

  • children’s parties

  • school visits

  • venue hire

  • cookery demonstrations, events and recipes

Included in the farm tour, is the opportunity to take in the milking process in the parlours from the ‘Cow Classroom’ alongside the parlour with viewing windows and overhead gallery where visitors can be guided through the whole time-consuming, labour-intensive process.

Starting in the 1940s with 20 milking cows at Southfield Farm in Somerby, 70 years later in 2018, the current family – Mark and Jane Barnes and their children, Charlotte and Harry, moved out of the village to expand their business. Today, the successful venture still has dairy cows at its core and supplies the milk for the award-winning Blue Stilton Cheese made at Clawson Dairy and gracing the shelves at UK high-end food retailer, Marks and Spencer.

The Barnes Family are passionate about their business. As Jane Barnes says: “Every child should meet a cow, take a tractor and trailer ride through open country and smell the fresh air on a real, working dairy farm.”

Shufflebottom is really pleased therefore to be part of this passion and the growth plan at Farmer Barnes’ Dairy, having manufactured, supplied and erected their milking parlour a few years ago, and recently in February 2023, delivered and erected an extension to the existing building. The building is a linear extension 30.48m long x 33.98m wide x 5.52m to eaves. The roof is glad in Natural Grey P6R Fibre Cement with 20% roof lights and the sides are clad in Vertical 0.5mm Plastic-Coated Box Profile.

Like Farmer Barnes’ Dairy we have a passion for what we do and it is always a source of pride that customers like Farmer Barnes’ Dairy return to us time and time again for its dairy-specific buildings. It is also a thrill for us to see yet more of our wide range of agricultural buildings sit in the beautiful landscape of Leicestershire.
