A new hub. A greener future

Shufflebottom is thrilled to have been at the heart of the  redevelopment project for a new £4m hub at Eastville, Bristol, for Wales & West Utilities, manufacturing and supplying a state-of-the-art steel-framed building. The company has long been known and respected for being responsible for the maintenance of pipes to keep gas flowing reliably to heat homes and power businesses for 7.5 million people across Wales and south west England.

The company employs approximately 1,300 people and the new base will include dedicated spaces for both office-based teams and teams that operate in the field. It is a symbol of confidence, and a commitment of Wales & West Utilities planned spend of £400 million (to 2026) to prepare the gas network across Wales and south west England to transport hydrogen and biomethane for a greener future.

Commissioned by its long-standing client, multi-disciplined contractor, Malpross Services, Shufflebottom has been involved in all stages of the development of this project, from concept to delivery. Working to architects Sauro’s drawings, we have provided the labour, plant and materials to undertake the steel-work design, detail, fabrication drawings, manufacture, finishing and delivery and erection on site. The hot-rolled steel we supplied was 57.58 tonnes and the cold-rolled, 22.80 tonnes. The steel-work for the mezzanine floor alone covered an area of 621.9 metres square.

Reflecting Wales & West Utilities commitment to sustainability, the building is energy efficient, and the site has almost 0.5 hectares set aside for biodiversity enhancements, including a pond area to promote wildlife and flowers, and preservation of existing badger runs.

It's hugely satisfying for us at Shufflebottom to have worked with Malpross Services and played out part in this project and to be associated with a company like Wales & West Utilities with its vision and mission for a greener future.

Our new state-of-the-art base has been built to exacting environmental standards. From solar panels and electric vehicle charging points to biodiversity enhancements, this depot is ready to support our teams and the local community long into the future.

Rob Long, Chief Operating Officer, Wales & West Utilities
