Going the Extra Mile for NSPCC

We often don’t see the super-heroes among us. When Dylan Rogers, our Transport Manager (who started as an HGV driver and has been part of our Shufflebottom #teamof steel for 18 years)  is doing his day job here at Cross Hands, he doesn’t wear a cape!

But, when he’s done at the factory, Dylan is a member of RIDE Cymru,  www.ridecymru.com a group of committed motor-cyclists, who for many years,  have been donning their capes and dressing up in honour of 1970’s legend, Evel Knievel, the world’s first dare-devil motor-cyclist jumper who inspired so many with his awe-inspiring feats and record-breaking stunts.

Dylan, like his motor-cycling colleagues at RIDE Cymru, believes that there is a lot of value in emulating Evel Knievel for a few days every year and Being Evel for a Good Cause. In this case that cause is NSPCC.

NSPCC is a leading children’s charity helping to end child abuse in the UK and Channel Islands. NSPCC helps children who have been abused to rebuild their lives; protects those at risk; and finds the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening in the first place.  As RIDE Cymru says: “every child deserves the best possible chance to rebuild their life. It’s why we’re here. It drives all our work and as long as there’s abuse, we’ll fight for every child.”

So for the 13th year, during the last days of May, over fifty motor-cyclists from RIDE Cymru (joined by others from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland) got into their Evel Knievel gear and literally geared up to ride end-to-end across the UK from John O’Groats to Land’s End.  This superb family of caped-bikers self-funded the event which took over 36-hours along non-motorway A routes from north to south. In doing this, they raised awareness of the role of NSPCC and importantly, raised much-needed funds for this wonderful charity.

The charity event was a big draw for crowds who turned out all along the route.. The ride even got coverage from STV. But the big news is that at the time of writing this story, the monies raised so far amounts to almost £29,000. The RIDE Cymru Knievels is fund raising for NSPCC www.justgiving.com page is still open should you wish to donate.

At Shufflebottom we couldn’t be more proud of our very own Evel Knievel, Dylan Rogers, and count ourselves lucky to have him as one of our #teamofsteel.
