Blue tie balls, big breakfasts, golf and vans

Over the years, Shufflebottom has made it its business to try and do its best to support charities. With so many causes that are in need of funding, this has not always been an easy choice and we wish we could support them all.

Sometimes though, those choices are made for you, and you turn to automatically trying to fund causes that are close to home and close to the heart. Such is the case with our relationship with Wales’ wonderful charity, Prostate Cymru, a mainly voluntary group dedicated to fighting Prostate Cancer. This was a relationship that began when one of our longest-standing members of staff here at Shufflebottom, Project Manager, Steve Sharp, was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, in 2022.

Steve, like all his colleagues at Shufflebottom, felt compelled to try and raise awareness of this cancer and also to play a part to help fund research for a Wales-wide screening programme and in so doing, help improve prostate cancer patient’ outcomes through early diagnosis, intervention and treatment.

In autumn 2022, we had a Big Breakfast Prostate Fundraiser here at Shufflebottom,  where all our team turned up not only to enjoy the food and put their hands into their pockets, but importantly, to be educated about Prostate Cancer,  in the best possible, way by Prostate Cymru’s specialist nurse.

In the summer of 2023, we teed off for Prostate Cymru at a Charity Golf Day at the magnificent Machynys – Wales’ first Nicklaus-designed golf course at Monks Island, near Llanelli. It was a 5-star experience and everyone who again turned up, dug deep and raised a lot of money for Prostate Cymru.

By the end of 2023, together, we had raised £10,000 – and importantly, also raised awareness of Prostate Cancer. Our motivation to the same end continues and Prostate Cymru Charity will continue to be our chosen charity in 2024. Watch this space for more news…

In recognition of Shufflebottom’s efforts to date to support Prostate Cymru, we were therefore thrilled recently to be invited to Prostate Cymru’s Blue Tie Ball and we were more than happy to turn up at a glittering event at The Vale Resort on 16th February, 2024. We were also more than happy to be commended for our support to the charity. It was a wonderful celebration of the success of Prostate Cymru we would like to extend our thanks to Prostate Cymru and our congratulations to the other businesses in the Corporate Fundraiser of the year category: Eversheds Sutherland; Ffos Las Racecourse and of course, the winner, Whitehead Building Services. Our Commendation Award is already on proud display in our board room!

But the work continues; and on Thursday 29th February, we once again welcomed the distinctive Prostate Cymru van turning up here in the Shufflebottom car park here in Cross hands. We know how this cancer is very sensitive and it is sometimes much easier for the Advice to come direct to those that might benefit from it rather than those men seeking it out. We know too, that already the van has had an impact on our workforce, and many of our men have actively sought a consultation with the friendly team of Prostate Cymric experts in the van!

We know we can’t change things overnight; but we hope we can continue to make a small difference in changing attitudes to this Cancer and help raise much-needed funds in the process.
