Collaboration at the heart of Ysgol Bryngwyn major rebuild and refurbishment
Shufflebottom is pleased to report that progress is well underway for a major rebuild and refurbishment at Ysgol Bryngwyn in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. Importantly, not only is progress well underway, but progressing well.
We are proud to be a key element in the supply chain for principal contractor, Lloyd & Gravell, of Pont-Henri, Llanelli who are delivering this multi-million project for their client Carmarthenshire County Council as part of its Modernising Education Programme in collaboration with Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
Lloyd & Gravell is one of Wales’ leading construction firms and a national, award-winning contractor. Their portfolio reflects a host of major capital projects that directly affect people in the local area, actively contributing to leaving lasting benefits in the communities they work, as well, of course, as an outstanding building.
Such is the case with Ysgol Bryngwyn, a forward-looking and innovative secondary school with over 1,070 pupils aged 11-16 which is currently oversubscribed. The extension and the refurbishment of the existing building will enable improvements to facilities and better opportunities to learners and the community going forward.
Lloyd & Gravell have collaboration at the heart of everything they do and they make it their business to engage with suppliers and outside contractors that are seen as an extension to their core team and an integral part of who they are and what they do. They clearly set out the sort of people they look to work with and we are proud that we at Shufflebottom tick all the right boxes:
We know them well
We share their values and aspirations
We are dependable
We respond quickly
We can provide specialist help to solve problems if they should arise
This collaboration has served all parts of the team, and the project well.
The project is an extension to the existing school, a canteen extension, additional science classrooms, a new entrance, and a plant room to support the additional spaces. Shufflebottom has worked closely with Lloyd & Gravell from the early stages (spring 2024) helping develop the project and helping to finalise the design of the main structure. The link bridge between the extension and the existing building is still under design review, but is progressing well.
Shufflebottom is proud to have delivered 141.65 tonnes of hot-rolled steel and 12.99 tonnes of cold-rolled steel for the steel frame that underpins the work. During the erection period, we also undertook the installation of PCC floor planks and PCC stairs, working seamlessly with the PCC provider and other partner in the local supply chain, FP McCann.
As expected, Lloyd & Gravell truly have collaborative values at the heart of their operation, as evidenced through the Lloyd & Gravell site team who have co-ordinated the site works between Shufflebottom and adjacent trades with professionalism and expediency.
It is a pleasure to be part of the big Carmarthenshire build at Ysgol Bryngwyn and we look forward to seeing the new development operational, and fit for a better future for the Llanelli community by autumn 2026.
