Local links between Industry and Education

At Shufflebottom we have enjoyed a history of forging successful links between our manufacturing business and education. We know how important it is that young people are properly prepared to make the transition from the classroom to the world of work.

That’s why we have been working recently with Ysgol Maes-y-Gwendraeth in Cefneithin, a neighbouring village to us here in Carmarthenshire. The Category 2A Welsh community school, was established in 2013 and takes pupils between the ages of 11-18. The school’s mission is to prepare its young people to take their pace in their communities whether it is here in Carmarthenshire or in the wider world.

The school has a thriving Sixth Form of 144 pupils, and the school prepares them for both University or Apprenticeships in industry as an equally valuable alternative. To this end, Shufflebottom Director, Alex Shufflebottom, visited the school to spend time with those in the Sixth Form to help them better understand, and prepare for, a future in employment. Alex covered areas such as:

  • preparing a CV that is succinct and showcases personal achievements

  • writing a covering letter that is targeted on the particular business rather than generic

  • presenting the best version of themselves at interview via mock interview questions, addressing areas such as what could they offer a business and what might a business offer them

At Shufflebottom, we understand that these pupils are the future of the workforce and the economy. And who knows, some of these pupils might one day be invited to interview here in the structural steel manufacturing sector and be part of our apprenticeships and skills training employee development.
